SEO, PPC & The Marketing Bar Stool

Aside from my passion for Marketing (SEO, PPC & Social Media), I love driving. Every year, my friends and I go on a driving trip abroad. This year, our need for speed took us to sample some of the finest roads in France, ending up in the picturesque city of Cannes.
No matter where I am in the world, I can’t switch my business/creative mind off… whether that is a good or bad thing, I will let you decide! As you can imagine, there are many, many stories from the trip I could tell you about, however one comes to mind.
The bar stool with two legs
When reaching Cannes after an epic cross-country final leg of our trip, we all had only one thing in our mind: The Bar. After such a journey, we all needed some refreshments to say the least. Let’s fast forward a few hours into the night; 8 of us sat in a lovely Cannes bar as the sun goes down.
A good (drunk) friend of mine and I were spending the night having a good old chat about everything and anything, when I went to the toilet. Upon my return, my friend was nowhere to be seen. As I walk around the other side of the bar, I discover him on the floor with the bar stool he was sitting on, on top of him.
Being the type person I am, after I stopped laughing, I wondered how this had happened to him. Turns out, he was swinging back on two of the bar stool legs. Unbalanced and unstable, he lost balance and fell over.
The interesting bit
I was sat on the exact same bar stool as my friend, however, because I was using all three legs of my bar stool, I was stable. I went on to help my friend up and tell him how daft he was and that he should maybe keep all three of the bar stool legs on the floor to be stable and keep a little of his dignity.
When it comes to Marketing, the same principles come into play.
It is important to cover as many routes to market as possible. Think of the bar stool legs as either PPC, SEO, Social Media etc… If you focus all of your efforts on just PPC (Pay-per-click) advertising for example and one day you can’t continue with it, your business could potentially fall flat on its face (like my friend). The same goes for SEO (Search Engine Optimisation); if you have only focus on SEO and don’t tap into PPC, you will be losing out on endless amounts of business opportunities. Think of it this way the more legs you have on the Bar Stool the more stable it is therefore the same goes for your marketing “Bar Stool” the more legs you have the more stable your new customer flow will be.
