In January of 2010, our promotional gift business was in deep trouble. We’d grown fast, in retrospect perhaps a little too fast. We’d bucked the trend and seemly avoided the recession that was causing chaos around us during 2009. We built a multi-million business on the back of Adwords and rode the wave, but we just hit the cliffs hard at start of 2010.
I was losing money fast on Adwords and had to find a way back to profitability. Oddly it came to me after pondering some new functionality that I’d spotted in Adwords. Surely there had to be a process or some reason to Adwords that I was missing? In one of those life changing moments, it was clear to me. It was at this event that I first experienced Paid Search at its best and simply put; I fell in love with Paid Search. I was its master, but this was quickly followed by anger at the armies of agencies I’d employed, who I now realised clearly knew nothing. Something for the most part that is still true in the paid search world to this day.
Shortly after that event, I launched Click Convert as a way to educate and help business owners and marketing professionals. Sometimes you can only create a major change, if you’ve experienced this type of problem as a customer – I’d say looking back that it was more akin to hell (it cost my wife her sight in one eye due to the stress). I’d learnt that a key issue with online retailing was isolation. You operate in a vacuum, you have no way of knowing how others are performing – are they busy or quiet, how much should conversions cost? You cannot beat having an expert on hand to guide you. I used to ring up my competitors to see how they were getting on! To solve the isolation issue I introduced mentoring as our key service, little did I know that it would be copied and it would become an entire industry in the UK. Ultimately, my goal was to enable advertisers to have a positive relationship with Google and Bing. The advertising relationship had become abusive or dysfunctional, as advertisers poured large sums of money into the coffers without a healthy return. I also wanted to end the negative stereotypes about Paid Search Agencies being lazy with work and pushy charlatans or snake oil salesmen when it came to their own sales.
It was very rewarding to share my experiences of solving the Adwords problem and connecting with other individuals who struggled with the same challenges. Hopefully, well I know, my words helped those growing their businesses. Often the advice wasn’t just related to Adwords, it was business mentoring too.
